Spider Software

The L word – Software used to connect the people they slept with?
Does the software exist? It kinda looks like a massive spider diagram…
For a couple of years there was an official website, ourchart.com which incorporated an online ‘chart’ like the one in the show along with forums, news, video blogs etc from the creators and cast members. However, shortly after the show ended, the site was taken down. I’m guessing the funding just wasn’t there to keep it in place, and the people involved (mainly Ilene Chaiken, show creator) couldn’t continue maintaining a site on a show they were no longer working on. It’s a shame as it was a very popular, busy site.
NB the chart on the website was not just about who people had slept with, but was more to connect friends with each other. People probably wouldn’t be honest enough to decalre who they’d slept with!

Avatars of Story $20 Since its inception, narratology has developed primarily as an investigation of literary narrative fiction. Linguists, folklorists, psychologists, and sociologists have expanded the inquiry toward oral storytelling, but narratology remains primarily concerned with language-supported stories. In Avatars of Story, Marie-Laure Ryan moves beyond literary works to examine other media, especially electronic narrative forms. By grappling with semiotic media other than language and technology other than print, she reveals how story, a form of meaning that transcends cultures and media, achieves diversity by presenting itself under multiple avatars. Ryan begins by considering, among other texts, a 1989 Cubs-Giants baseball broadcast, the reality television show Survivor, and the film The Truman Show. In all these texts, she sees a narrative that organizes meaning without benefit of hindsight, anticipating the real-time dimension of computer games. She then expands her inquiry to new media. In a discussion covering text-based interactive fiction such as Spider and Web and Galatea, hypertexts such as Califia and Patchwork Girl, multimedia works such as Juvenate, Web-based short narratives, and Facade, a multimedia, AI-supported project in interactive drama, she focuses on how narrative meaning is affected by the authoring software, such as the Infocom parser, the Storyspace hypertext-producing system, and the programs Flash and Director. She also examines arguments that have been brought up against considering computer games such as The Sims and EverQuest as a form of narrative, and responds by outlining an approach to computer games that reconciles theirimaginative and strategic dimension. In doing so, Ryan distinguishes a wide spectrum of narrative modes, such as utilitarian, illustrative, indeterminate, metaphorical, participatory, emergent, and simulative. Ultimately, Ryan stresses the difficulty of reconciling narrativity with interactivity |

Disney’s Tigger’s Honey Hunt $8.95 Tigger is the one Disney character that seems tailor-made for a computer game. From his chief mode of transport (bouncing) to his jocular can-do attitude ( Collecting honey pots is what Tiggers do best! ), Disney game icons like Buzz Lightyear could learn a thing or two from this peppy pouncer.? In Tigger’s Honey Hunt, the mission is to guide Tigger through nine levels within the Hundred Acre Wood on a quest for honey pots. Pooh needs the honey pots in order to throw a party, which is a nice central premise: Tigger’s task is to be helpful, not blow up the enemy. A secondary goal is collecting snapshots of Winnie the Pooh characters that float through the woods in order to build the pages of a photo album. As difficulty levels increase, the keyboard-controlled Tigger must avoid everything from angry bees to falling rocks to the dreaded Heffalumps and Woozles. If Tigger gets frightened three times, the game is interrupted, and Tigger backtracks to a checkpoint to regain his courage. Easier courses must be mastered before moving on to harder ones.? Inspired touches include spider-web trampolines, a richly illustrated book-like format for moving within the program, and a dialog transcript that appears at the bottom of the screen anytime Tigger interacts with one of the many characters along his path. It’s a great way to sneak some reading practice into the game, especially with some of the words Tigger concocts.? The program’s weak spots are the initially inexplicable Classic Mini Games. Kids can leave the main game behind and play Rabbit Says, Pooh Sticks, and Paper, Scissors, Stone. These games are designed for multiple players, which is why they’re unwieldy: A single player must use X, D, V, and C on the keyboard to navigate her or his Pooh Stick as it drifts in a stream. Player number two must use number pad 4, 8, 6, and 5. And so forth. It’s confusing enough for one player, as these keying sequences aren’t explained within the game. Lining up four players along the |
